Santa Cruz Llanganuco Trek

Trekking in peru group departures 2024

An exciting shorter trek in the Cordillera Blanca. Its popularity is due to the spectacular mountain views, crystal blue lakes and the challenging pass Punta Union at altitude 4750m. An amazing variety of scenery in only 4 or 5 days and an achievable high mountain trek for all people with a love of the outdoors & reasonable fitness level.

Day 1: Drive from Huaraz to Cashapampa 2800m 3 hours. We meet our donkey drovers, load all equipment onto donkeys and start trekking. We hike continuously upwards following the Santa Cruz river, first we are in a narrow canyon and then after lunch the country opens up into a wider valley and we start to see the snow covered peaks. We camp in an open field near the river at Llamacorral 3750m 5 hours.

Day 2: An easier day hiking in a wide open valley. We pass by two small lakes and then we have our first glimpse of the famous Alpamayo peak. We camp at Taullipampa 4250m, a beautiful campsite surrounded by towering peaks and nestled near the bottom of Punta Union Pass. 4 hours.
Optional extra day. Stay another night at beautiful Taullipampa campsite. Options to visit Alpamayo Base Camp, Lake Arhuaycocha, climb Centillo Peak 5000m or have a rest day

Day 3 (or 4): Climb steadily up for 2 to 3 hours to the pass Punta Union 4750m then descend past a small alpine lake where we often stop for picnic lunch. Continue the descent towards the Huaripampa Valley before leaving the main trail and traversing through low bush to our camp in a secluded valley away from the main trail at Paria 3850m. 7 hours.

Day 4 (or 5): Follow easily down the valley Quebrada Huaripampa passing through farming settlements and villages, and then a short climb to the road end at Vaqueria 4 to 5 hours walk. Our private van will take us over the pass Portuchuelo 4767m, passing the famous Llangunuco Lakes and then to return to Huaraz.

Cedros Alpamayo Trek 2024

Trekking in Huaraz

Day 1: Huaraz - Yungay (2900m) - Hualcayan (3000m) - Huishcash (4320m) Early in the morning we leave Huaraz towards the Callejón de Huaylas. We pass carhuaz and stop at Yungay to visit the "Campo Santo" – Holy place. Yungay and its 20,000 inhabitants were burried under an avalanche caused by a tremendous earthquake in 1970.

We continue our trip to Hualcayan - the starting point of our trek. Here we meet with our team (porters, donkeys). Ascending a Zig-Zag trial we slowly gain altitude and can see the northern part of the Callejon de Huaylas. We arrive at our camp site in the late afternoon and can enjoy the beautifull sunset over the Cordillera Negra.

Day 2: Huishcash (4200m) - Toropishtanan Pass (4850m) - Osoruri (4300m)Today is going to be a hard one: the highest pass of the tour is expecting us. On our way we pass 1 turquois mountain lakes, Cullicocha ( 4600 m. )- "Cocha" in Quechua means mountain lake. Continuing our trek we have a beautiful view on the Santa Cruz (6259m) with its impressing ice wall. Finally we come to a mountain lake, which is the beginning of our steep ascent to the pass. On the top we see the Milluacocha (5480m) - on our ascent to the next camp site Osoruri we pass this mountain on the right side.

Day 3: Osoruri (4300m) - Alpamayo pass (4750m) - Jancarurish (4200m) Immediately after breakfast we countinue our trek towards the Alpamayo pass from where we once again can see the Milluacocha and the Pilanco (5373m). The descent leads us in several serpentines down to the Los Cedros gorge. We now can admire the first time the perfect ice pyramide of the Alpamayo (5947m) - many mountaineers call it the most beautiful mountain of the world.

Day 4: Rest day with visit to "viewer" Alpamayo piramid..

Day 5: Jancarurish (4200m) - Cara Cara Pass (4830m) - Huillca (4000m) Today it is again going to be a hard day:two passes are expecting us. However, first we have to cross a river - hopefully without getting wet. What follows then is a steep ascend towards the first pass. Having arrived there we are rewarded with a fantastic view of the Jancarurisch (5578m), Quitaraju (6036m) and Alpamayo (5947m). Again we are impressed by the seemingly unapproachability of those ice giants. After short break we start our descent down to the Mesapampa valley and then directly climb the second pass (4500m). From here we see the Laguna Safuna, which we leave at the right side to come to our camp site (Huillca ).

Day 6: Huillca (4000m) - Yanacon Pass (4600m) - Jancapampa (3600m) On our way to the pass we can observe with some luck condors and eagles. The Yanacon pass then gives us a good view at the Pucajirca (6050m). Passing the Laguna Sactaycocha we arrive at our camp site - the first one under 4000m. (7 - 8 hours)

Day 7: Jancapampa (3600m) - Tupa Tupa (4400m) - Huecrucoha lake (3850m) Today we th e first time cross a typical andean village, Pingoshpampa, where we get an impression of the life of the indigenous population. We stay here a little bit and then start ascending the pass, which by far is not as high as those before. Again we are rewarded with a wonderful view. Finally we walk down to the Laguna Huecrucocha, where we spend the today`s night.

Day 8: Quisuar (3950m) - Pucaraju Pass (4650m) - Tuctu (4200m) A Zig Zag path leads us to the Pucaraju pass. From here we see some of the most majestic and beautiful mountains of the Cordillera Blanca: Chopicalqui (6354m), Huascaran (6768m, the highest mountain of Peru), Huandoy (6160m) and Taulliraju (5830m).

Day 9: Tuctu (4200m) - Punta Unión pass (4750m) - Taullipampa (4200m) Today we have to master our last pass, which will give us a fantastic view at the Santa Cruz valley with its turquois lakes andthe ice giants surrounding it. From the camp site (Taullipampa) we look back to the Taulliraju - one of the most difficult peaks of the Cordillera Blanca.

Day 10: Taullipampa - Quebrada Arhueycocha- llamacorral ( 3800 m.) Descent and visit to quebrada and Arhueycocha lake. From here the ascent to the Alpamayo base camp would start. Continuing our trek we pass 2 wonderful mountain lakes Rest in Llamacorral.

Day 11: Llamacorral - Cashapampa (2980m) - Huaraz (3090m) We pass the complete Santa Cruz Valley and see the valley - this time from a totally different perspective. . The valley is getting narrower, the vegetation becomes lushier and through a gate we enter the village Cashapampa. Here our bus brings us back to Huaraz.
